What's included

High-resolution scanning. Actionable results.

Our non-intrusive surveys use surface-based magnetometry to detect buried anomalies across your site, before a single spadeful of earth is turned.

  • Magnetometry Survey

Towed or handheld magnetometers deployed across the site to detect subsurface ferrous anomalies with high precision.

  • GNSS Positioning

Every anomaly is georeferenced to sub-metre accuracy, mapped and reported for direct use in your project GIS or CAD environment.

  • Anomaly Classification

Each detected anomaly is assessed, classified by size and depth and prioritised, giving your team clear, actionable recommendations.

  • CIRIA C681 Compliant

Surveys designed and reported in full accordance with CIRIA C681, meeting planning authority and Principal Designer requirements.

  • Fast Mobilisation

Typically deployed within 5 working days of instruction. Survey results reported within 48 hours of fieldwork completion.

  • Senior Engineer Sign-off

Every survey report reviewed and certified by a chartered engineer. Never delegated to junior or sub-contracted staff.

When you need one

Early intelligence. Fewer surprises.

Non-intrusive surveys are appropriate in more situations than many project teams realise, from early-stage planning to brownfield validation.

  • Pre-application planning

You're preparing a planning application and need to establish UXO risk before committing to costly intrusive investigation.

  • Brownfield site validation

A preliminary risk assessment has flagged potential risk and you need a proportionate next step before piling or excavation begins.

  • Large open-area screening

You need cost-effective coverage of a large site to identify areas of concern before committing to targeted intrusive works.

  • Sound like you?

Our magnetometry surveys are typically mobilised within 5 working days, with results reported within 48 hours of fieldwork completion.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • A non-intrusive survey uses surface magnetometry to detect buried ferrous metal objects without disturbing the ground. Sensors are passed systematically across the site and measure variations in the Earth's magnetic field caused by metallic objects below. The data is then processed and interpreted by a specialist to identify anomalies that may be UXO, distinguishing likely targets from general scrap metal or geological noise.

  • Standard ground-based magnetometry provides reliable detection to approximately 4 metres below the surface, with some systems capable of assurance to 6 metres depending on soil conditions and instrument configuration. Where proposed works go deeper (for example, piled foundations or deep basement excavations), an intrusive CPT survey will be required to provide assurance at greater depth.

  • Ideally early in the pre-construction phase, once a Detailed Risk Assessment has confirmed that a physical survey is required. Conducting the survey before any site clearance, topsoil stripping, or utility trenching ensures maximum data quality. Early results also allow anomaly investigation to be programmed efficiently alongside other enabling works, minimising disruption to the programme.

  • Duration depends on site area, ground conditions, and access constraints. A compact brownfield plot of a few thousand square metres can typically be surveyed in one to two days; larger open sites may require several days. The main factors that slow progress are extensive above-ground metallic clutter, steep or waterlogged terrain, and restricted access windows. A clear, stripped site will always yield faster and more reliable results.

  • The report provides a plan of all anomalies detected, their approximate depth and dimensions, and a priority ranking based on likelihood of being ordnance. It will recommend which targets require supervised excavation. A non-intrusive survey alone does not constitute a clearance certificate; it identifies what may be present and where. Clearance is only confirmed once priority targets have been excavated, assessed, and an ALARP certificate issued.

  • It can, but performance is significantly affected by existing structures, underground services, reinforced concrete, and metallic debris, all of which create interference that can mask genuine targets. Where a site has already been partially developed, the surveyor will zone the coverage and document any areas where assured detection could not be achieved. For very constrained sites, intrusive CPT methods may be more appropriate.

S.I UXO has supported a range of our projects, including active and former MOD facilities. They deliver agreed scopes effectively and operate both professionally and with clear intent to minimise any disruption to ongoing works.

David Pethica /Director, Ground Condition Consultants Ltd

I've been impressed with S.I UXO's work attitude and quality. They have incredibly worked well with our site engineers and drillers, ensuring minimal disruption to our ground investigation works. I will certainly be using S.I UXO in the future.

Niall Kiernan /Project Manager, SOCOTEC UK Ltd

I've had the pleasure of working with S.I UXO over the past two years, I can confidently say that their performance has been nothing short of exemplary. I highly recommend S.I UXO for any UXO project that demands the utmost in reliability and professionalism.
